WALTZ WITH BASHIR VIEWER'S GUIDE

The Foundation for Jewish Culture is proud to have supported Ari Folman's Waltz with Bashir through a grant from our Lynn and Jules Kroll Fund for Jewish Documentary Film. This beautiful, moving and nuanced film recently won a Golden Globe, was named Best Film of 2008 by the National Society of Film Critics and is short-listed for an Academy Award©.

In collaboration with MAKOM - the cultural arm of the Jewish Agency Education department - we offer you this viewer's guide to Waltz With Bashir. The guide has been created to facilitate discussion and encourage thoughtful consideration of the complex and difficult subject matter of the film.

  • Click HERE to download a single-page handout for individuals or HERE to download the complete handout for individuals, which includes FAQs, more sources of information and excerpts from The Kahan Report- the Israeli government commissioned an investigation into Sabra and Shatila headed up by Chief Justice Kahan.
  • Click HERE to download the facilitator's guide for leaders of post-screening discussion. This includes an introduction, a discussion guide with questions, and a guide in placemat form to print out and use in a bar or cafe for less formal conversations.
  • Click HERE to download the supplemental materials for text study. The study sheets address the moral questions surrounding the idea of indirect responsibility. The first draws on traditional sources referred to by the Israeli Government Commission on Sabra and Shatila run by Chief Justice Kahan, and the second draws from more contemporary Israeli sources. The sheets are accompanied by a facilitator's guide with some leading questions.

This guide is made available to you for no cost from MAKOM and the Foundation for Jewish Culture's Lynn and Jules Kroll Fund for Jewish Documentary Film. The Foundation for Jewish Culture wants to thank Robbie Gringras and MAKOM for the opportunity to collaborate on such an important and timely project. We are grateful for their incredible work and indomitable spirit. Thanks also to the UJC, the Alliance and our fellow Agencies for their ongoing support. And of course, Lynn and Jules Kroll for making this possible.
